DYF leader Mikel Chakma arrested
Mikel Chakma, member secretary of the Democratic Youth Forum, a front
organisation of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF), was
arrested by RAB – 7 yesterday (Tuesday) in Chittagong.
He was holding a meeting with DYF supporters at a house at Banikpara
of Sagarika road in Pahartali at 6pm when members of the Rapid Action
Battalion, led by Major Abdus Samad, commander of RAB - Chittagong
Unit, arrested him.
The RAB put a pipe gun in his hand after arrest.
DYF convenor Mithun Chakma condemned the arrest and said, “The claim
that RAB has recovered arms and Yaba (drugs) from Mikel Chakma is
absolutely false; there is not an iota of truth in it.”
He demanded that Mikel Chakma be released immediately and unconditionally.
The arrest of Mikel Chakma represented his fourth arrest. He was first
arrested in 2003 from a house in Bandar area of Chittagong.
He was again arrested from a community centre in Chittagong along with
many other UPDF members in 2004 and spent a few days in police
custody.
His third arrest came during the rule of emergency in 2007. This time
he was arrested by army from Longudu in Rangamati district while he
was on a visit to his village. He was badly tortured and sent to jail.
The DYF will stage demonstrations throughout the CHT in protest
against his arrest.
Mikel Chakma has played an important role in reorganising DYF in
Chittagong after the end of emergency rule.
He actively helped in organising conferences of DYF Chittagong
Metropolitan City unit and Bandar Thana Unit.
He also maintained regular contacts with media persons on behalf of the UPDF.

গণতান্ত্রিক যুব ফোরাম, পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের যুব সমাজের অগ্রণী সংগঠন। এই সংগঠনের সদস্য সচিব হলেন মাইকেল চাকমা। তিনি আজ ৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি সন্ধ্যায় চট্টগ্রামের একটি জনসমাগমপূর্ন এলাকা থেকে গ্রেপ্তার হন। যুব ফোরামের কেন্দ্রীয় কাউন্সিল আগামী ১এপ্রিল চট্টগ্রামে অনুষ্ঠানের সিদ্ধান্ত নেবার পর থেকে তিনি সাংগঠনিককাজে চট্টগ্রামে অবস্থান করছিলেন। আমরা সাধারণভাবে জানি যে, RAB কাউকে আটক করলে একটি নাটক সাজাবে। এই ঘটনাতেও তার কোনো অন্যথা হবার কথা নয়। কিন্তু তাকে গ্রেপ্তারের মূল রাজনৈতিক কারণ হচ্ছে - RABকে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের রাজনৈতিক ঘটনাপ্রবাহের অঙ্গিভূত করার উদ্যোগ নেয়া অর্থাত্ RABকে দিয়ে আগামীতে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামে শাসনমূলক নিপীড়ন চালানোর উদ্দেশ্যেই মাইকেল চাকমাকে গ্রেপ্তার করে সন্ত্রাসী ধরার ধারাবাহিক নাটক দেখানোর লক্ষ্রেই এই আটকের মূল কারণ।
২য় কারণ হচ্ছে আন্দোলনের গতিপথ স্তব্ধ করে দেয়া। যুব ফোরাম পার্বত্য চট্গ্রামের আগামী আন্দোলনের অগ্রগামী একটি শক্তি। এই শক্তিকে রুখতেই সরকার তাকে আটক করেছে।
আমরা মনে করি আমাদেরকে গ্রেপ্তার করে আন্দোল স্তব্ধ হবে না বরং আমরা নতুন এক শক্তি লাভ করবো আমাদেরকে আটকের মধ্য দিয়ে। আমরা যুব সমাজ গণতান্ত্রিক আন্দোলনের পোড়খাওয়া নৈনিক হতে চাই। সরকার আমদেরকে RAB-Army-Police দিয়ে গ্রেপ্তার করলে আমরা পোড়খাওয়া সৈনিক হতে পারবো এই আমাদের আত্মবিশ্বাস।
